Orange & Cinnamon Massage Oil

Orange & Cinnamon Massage Oil is the seasonal oil in this range, and the cinnamon in it is not the one most people picture. Interesting fact: the label names Cinnamomum zeylanicum Leaf Oil, and cinnamon leaf and cinnamon bark are two different commercial materials with two different chemistries. Leaf oil runs roughly 70 to 83 percent eugenol with only a few percent cinnamaldehyde, while bark oil is dominated by cinnamaldehyde at around 75 percent. Eugenol is the molecule that makes clove smell like clove, so this reads warm and spicy and slightly clove-like, not like a cinnamon stick in mulled wine. Sweet orange sits on top of it in two forms, with grapefruit peel oil alongside, and grape seed and almond oils carry the whole thing. Tocopherol appears fourth on the list. Main benefits:

• Warm and spicy from eugenol, which is closer to clove than to cinnamon bark.
• Two sweet orange oils plus grapefruit, so the citrus is rounder than a single peel.
• Nine ingredients, four of them aromatic, where most oils in this range carry one.

How the product works: The citrus oils are cold-pressed and light, so they arrive first and fade first. The cinnamon leaf oil is heavier and stays behind them, which is what gives the blend a shape across the hour instead of a single flat note. Grape seed oil thins under warm hands, almond oil holds the slip, wheat germ oil and tocopherol sit on the antioxidant side of the formula, and allantoin closes it on skin conditioning. How to use:

1. Application: 15 ml. Warm it well; the cinnamon leaf note needs body heat to come forward and stays flat on a cold application.
2. Massage: Back, shoulders and legs. Keep it off the face and off broken skin.

Rio Massage Oil

Rio Massage Oil is Zen with one ingredient added, and it is worth saying that plainly because anyone can put the two labels side by side. The added ingredient is angelica essential oil, and it changes the aroma rather than the treatment. Interesting fact: angelica is used in perfumery at fractions of a percent, not because it is weak but because it is a fixative. Its job is to slow down the lighter materials around it, so a composition with angelica in it holds on skin and on linen for longer than the same composition without. Here it sits alongside vetiver, which is also a root oil, and the two together push the whole blend downwards: the cold-pressed tangerine still opens it, but underneath there is a damp, earthy, faintly peppery depth that Zen does not have. Twelve ingredients, the longest label in this range. Main benefits:

• The longest ingredient list of the sixteen, with five carrier and extract components and six aromatics.
• Two root oils, angelica and vetiver, which is what gives the base its damp, earthy character.
• Holds on skin and linen longer than the same formula without angelica.
• The same four-oil carrier base as Zen, so the slip behaves identically.

How the product works: The carrier side is unchanged from Zen: safflower runs light and absorbs quickly, avocado carries a comparatively large unsaponifiable fraction and gives body, with sweet almond and grape seed between them. The difference is entirely in the aroma. Angelica is a heavy, low-volatility material, so it evaporates slowly and holds the lighter tangerine, green tea and lavender components in place around it. That is what a fixative does, and it is why the same session smells stronger at minute seventy than it would with Zen. How to use:

1. Application: 15 ml. Dose it as you would Zen; the carrier base is identical.
2. Massage: Any protocol, though the longer ones show more of what the angelica is doing.
3. Tip: Ask the client where they are going afterwards. If the answer is a beach, a terrace or a sunbed, use Zen instead and keep this one for evening bookings.

Suitable for: Evening and indoor bookings, therapists who found Zen's aroma too light, and practices that want two related oils on the shelf where one is the daytime version and the other the evening one.

Sun caution: Contains angelica essential oil. Angelica root oil is restricted by IFRA for phototoxicity in leave-on body products. Until the plant part and concentration are confirmed on the batch documentation, treat this blend as phototoxic: keep treated skin out of direct sunlight and off sunbeds for at least 12 hours after the session. If you need a sun-safe alternative with the same base, use Zen, which is this formula without the angelica.
